About the Artist
I really dislike referring to myself in the third person, so...
I was born in a little town called LaSalle, Illinois in 1970. Raised
there, I'd found at an early age (about 8 I think) I had a love
for art and drawing. My parents called this a phase, something I
would drop after a couple weeks. (I was kind of a hyper kid) Well,
this 'phase' never really went away, and in my high school years
I was the 'artist' in the school and was cursed with an abundance
of bad taste. I had the 80's big hair Goth boy thing going on, and
to this day, I feel that it is the reason I am very bald. I played
pen and paper RPGs like D&D and Shadowrun in high school and
used them as inspiration to make artworks.
Upon graduating high school, I'd realized I had no money, and little
discipline. So I joined the Army. I intended to be a Reservist,
working to get through college, but this was 1990 and the Middle
east Persian Gulf erupted. So after basic training/advanced training.
I'd spent a couple months at home before being shipped to the Middle
East as full time Army. That was... interesting... to say the least.
When I returned, I can honestly say I was a new man with a wider
perspective on the world. I finished my Reserve time while I was
in college.
I spent my college years at Northern Illinois University, getting
a fine arts degree in Illustration. While I was there I learned
the basics of the biz, all the theory of design, color, technique
and the like. During my Sophomore year at Northern, I started to
freelance with White Wolf and any other gaming company that would
hire me. It was a great experience and I needed the cash. While
I was in school I picked up a few steady jobs that got me invaluable
experience with the computer and most of the software I use today.
After graduating from Northern in 1996, I worked as a temp designer,
a freelance designer in Chicago for a few firms in the city. Next
job that came up was from a company called FASA Corporation. I was
a true geek with Shadowrun in high school and I'd been wanting to
freelance for FASA since college... as fate would have it...
I worked at FASA for 5 years. While I was there I worked with a
great staff of people, who had some of the same work ethic I'd developed.
I loved what I did, and felt good about it. While I was there I'd
worn many hats. I was a graphic designer, production artist, submissions
artist, illustrator, an art director, and even an IT guy. I managed
to see a lot of artwork and work with a great group of artists.
Life's weird eh?
Well all good things must come to an end... FASA closed, and became
WizKids and FanPro respectively. but I had other plans.
In college, I went from a pen and paper game junkie to a video
game junkie and I loved Raven's games. I was wanting to get into
the video game industry and an artist job opened up just as I needed
it, so I moved to Madison Wisconsin. I was hired to work on 3d,
but quickly moved into a 2D position. I tend to soak up technologies
pretty quickly so on Quake 4 my title changed from artist to technical
artist, since I was able to pick up the tech and the particle system
in the game pretty quickly. I get a buzz from learning, so now I'm
trying to re-learn some 3d stuff, HLSL and get a wider understanding
of particle systems. Now I tend to help the art team troubleshoot,
build cool effects and specialty materials, and train the team on
the implementation of new information.
So far I've worked on are Soldier of Fortune 2 and Jedi Knight
2: Jedi Outcast, X-men: Legends ( in a very small way) and was the
assistant art lead on Quake 4.. I'm currently working on the latest
chapter in the Wolfenstein saga as a technical artist, which is
pretty cool. Looking to flex my creative muscles on that. Well that
gets you up to date now.
Mmmmm yup
